Saul 03:38
I've seen Jesus through a smoke ring Must have been a sign Through he's rarely recognises me Enough to say hi Was I the lost apostle? Was he just my brothers' confrere? Had he influenced my leaving by Tipping 'cut your hair'? Just for a day It was just for a day Just for a day Should I be that other guy or should I search my box of stars? The silence sounds like thunder Like the spaces between bars They appear to me like pictures Through it's me who has been framed And now that I'm way older Could it be they felt the same? Just for a day It was just for a day Just for a day

Woody 04:33
Waiting for the Greyhound six sixty six Top up the grubstake find me a fix I'd swapped orange overalls for whipcord cotton garms Flicking the fruit flies from farm to farm Hollyhock fields of Oklahoma are blurring through like a Dodge Daytona But a mac's no good if you got no hood But a mac's no good if you got no hood But a mac's no good if you got no hood So I'm waiting for some life to comein to view If I stay here I'll die here haunt my own ghost Got two stops to bear in this glass house at most The tears from the crown sting my heavy eyes I'll ask a passenger to wake me by five Poppy fields of my Sonora are blurring through like Appaloosas But a mac's no good if you got no hood But a mac's no good if you got no hood But a mac's no good if you got no hood So I'm waiting for some life to comein to view

Alice 03:49
We have nothing left to fear except for fear itself, and all we have to change is the world Then maybe we'll change ourselves How long, do we have alone? How wrong? Our body's overthrown by being Fill your boots let the desert flowers deepen their roots Flies they hover over us and it's inevitably our time. If I ever were in trouble it's now We hear, the whipping lines up on the tracks Yet the kids they know just where it's at. You're not the world's problem, the world is
4.
Sam 03:25
We're steady in the pink helm of our script but life charms only the verses; Navigates us into the light Spiders in a web flies in a bind gathering the jars of corpses Only for the crows to heist A person who's nothing to lose has nothing the live for so is it ok to take it to the lam? Every day I'm born I am Matthew's law a lasso of roots being pulled from the filth into faith's war Lose weight for our jumpsuits rollin' ste-el for the man: Just a footprint in time so says Sam Seeing hide nor hair when the black dog's back in town whenever Sam is around
5.
Sally 04:06
Stood unstirred behind the fence High alert armed every sense The shuffled grass The foiled paths Some delays have dangerous means Slumping clouds, so as to breach A window of time To meet their demise La maison est le chasseur Ce qui est à moi est à toi La maison est le chasseur Ce qui est à moi est à toi La maison est le chasseur Ce qui est à moi est à toi Undeterred by the wave of sibilance And the hounds, the hounds in blue marking territory Scaling the fence There is movement way over there She waits holding one arm in the air Strikes as he sleeps Rips the nape with her teeth

Santiago 03:25
The lighthouse underneath the sea how- it came -to be How- it came -to be Some nights you can see the trembling swells -of light - bright purls Flickers 'mongst the swirl We're designed to see and hear everything we've ever feared Blood is thicker than the sea we are just somewhere in-between Same mistakes and brand new morning brand new morning same mistakes Standing at the pantheon all we have is zeros and ones If you stay headland you may wake from - rumbling diaphone Gentle rattled bones Maybe it's some kind of nexus- what's approaching- no one knows Nobody knows We're designed to see and hear everything we've ever feared Blood is thicker than the sea we are just somewhere in-between Same mistakes and brand new morning brand new morning same mistakes Standing at the pantheon all we have is zeros and ones There's different horses for different courses We're just the sum of our parts Someone's trash is Another's riches We're just the sum of our parts
7.
Thomas 02:54
I stare into an empty glass viewing wasted skin And say Would God it came to pass, my heart hangs from a string Only for then I un-dis-trest, growing cold to me Could lonely wait my endless rest? It's lonely all at sea As I look into my glass What if fire and faith within us Men who march, no tears can win us Joy- stoking up the fire Fill up our glass- bring on home the Pires Two thousand years of solid mass Only a man harrowing clods- In a silent walk A stumbled horse and with it nods- sleeping as they stalk I stare into an empty glass viewing wasted skin And say Would God it came to pass, my heart hangs from a string Joy- stoking up the fire Fill up our glass- bring on home the Pires Two thousand years of solid mass All we have is poisoned gas

Roman 03:04
O let me hear you talking In an accent clear and still Above the storms of passion The murmurs of self-will Speak with reassurance To quicken and control Speak and make me listen The guardian of my soul And I think you know what I know Let the lifting of our hands Be admission to be alive Set a watch before our mouths No man is justified And I think you know what I know

about

James Summerfield returns after a few years of side-project distraction. There’s a new line up and a 7th studio album, THEM (Say ‘Aargh’ Records 2023)

THEM (release date 18th Sept 2023)- Eclectic guitar driven Americana
It’s been 20 years since James’ debut, ‘Hailah, Hailah’- a collection of grainy, lo-fi alt-country reminiscent of early Jason Molina or Will Oldham. Though the Americana flavours still linger, the level of craftsmanship in the songwriting and production are leagues above.
THEM is an example of how contrasting guitar textures and styles can have glorious results. In ‘Saul’, grungy noise guitar sits alongside violin swells, and in ‘Sam’, sweeping pedal steel rides over bass driven fuzz distortion. James’ new band members have clearly raised the bar.
The album as a whole is juxtaposed in style. The experimental production of ‘Roman’ and ‘Alice’ are reminiscent of the late Mark Linkous’, whereas ‘Woody’ and Sally’ have much more of a 70s West Coast feel. This keeps THEM pleasantly unpredictable.
With the exception of the song ‘Sally’ (where James sings cryptically about ferrel cats), the subject matter focuses on one particular person (hence the titles) in the form of a conversation or narrative. In doing so, James peppers the album with intriguing mantras. In ‘Sam’, he sings ‘A person who has nothing to lose has nothing to live for’, and in the song ‘Alice’, James, now in his early 40’s, challenges generational attitudes- ‘All we have to change is the world, then maybe we’ll change ourselves.’
These 8 songs are up there with the likes of Elliott Smith and Sparklehorse, so if that sort of thing floats your boat…
